Join Gwendolyn Dubois Shaw, Afua Hirsch and Frances Morris as they discuss Kara Walker’s 2019 Hyundai Commission

This in conversation will explore Kara’s Hyundai commission along with the key themes and questions it raises. This includes the legacy of Empire, public monuments, contemporary and historic violence of water, the black Atlantic and culture and narrative.

We will also consider the role that art and artists play in bringing about change.

This event will be accompanied by BSL interpretation.

Biography

Gwendolyn Dubois Shaw

Gwendolyn DuBois Shaw is the National Portrait Gallery’s (Smithsonian) director of history, research and scholarship / senior historian.

Afua Hirsch

Afua Hirsch is an author, journalist, broadcaster and former barrister.

Frances Morris

Frances Morris is the director of Tate Modern.

This event is part of the Terra Foundation for American Art Series: New Perspectives.
